Magic 999 put the medium into medium-wave!

It was 5pm, Tuesday 13th April, and, as rush hour traffic began to back-up on the main roads into Preston, I realised that, despite my best intentions, I would be extremely fortunate to arrive at my destination, the Frog and Bucket, by the allotted time of 5:30.

If the venue name seems familiar, that will probably be because of its comedy nights. In fact its big cousin in Manchester played host to one of Peter Kay’s first ever stand-up gigs. Tonight, however, was ‘Psychic Night’ and listeners from Lancashire’s Magic 999 and Rock FM were about to be treated to not one…not two…but a whole quartet of mediums, bringing eager messages from the other side (and no, I don’t mean Wigan!)

The Frog and Bucket is quite neatly hidden away from sight of most of Preston’s main roads so a crystal ball might once have been the best way to find it. Fortunately, in these technological times, it was good old Google Earth that came to my aid (as usual) and so, with six o’clock looming, I dived out of the car and sprinted (…well jogged…well power-walked) to the doors. By the way if anyone saw a strange little fellow changing his shoes on the flyover, that was me!

I arrived with the stars of the show already in situ (but to be fair, psychic’s can’t really cite unforeseen delays can they). Fortunately, due to the event guy, John, pulling out all the stops (well the plug to the gambling machine at least) to find me juice for my laptop, and the Psychic Roadshow adopting me for the evening, I soon settled in to do a spot of work before enjoying the show. With the night a sell-out and Magic’s brilliant Breakfast Show presenter, Jude (below right), introducing the guests, the scene was set for a mystical marathon – northern style!

All four mediums; Mike (above centre-right), Wendy, Julie and Denise, were engaging and provided plenty of entertainment and food for thought for believers, skeptics and in-betweeners alike but if I had to pick the two stars of the show I would have to say Denise and Mike were on fine form.

I spoke to Denise before she went on and she admitted that she was a little nervous but had been told by others that she was funny when on-stage. Well, from where I was standing the nerves weren’t evident at all and the ‘others’ were spot on. Denise added the wit to witchcraft (OK I know she’s not a witch but I can’t resist a bit of alliteration), at one point passing on a message to a guest suggesting visiting a graveyard might bring her some peace and quiet, conceding afterwards that she wouldn’t be taking the same advice. Denise is also a psychic artist and can produce portraits of the discarnate as well as chakra paintings. You can visit her website here.

But if the night was a festival and there was room for one headline act, then Mike Ireland, sporting the first ponytail I’d encountered since Somerset, would have topped the bill. Jude introduced him as the ‘Bernard Manning of the spirit world’ and I think that label is going to stick. Mike is a regular voice on Magic’s Breakfast Show, giving live readings ‘on air’, and was on form from the beginning. When his first target wasn’t quick enough in accepting various birthday and anniversary dates, Mike inquired as to how long it took her to say ‘yes, I do’ at the altar. Some of the guests gave as good as they got, though, which made for great entertainment. To find out more about what Mike does, click here.

In addition to the demonstrations there was a charity raffle with prizes galore, from psychic readings to slap-up meals.

Your's Truly in action!

I would have liked to have stayed longer but, not being particularly keen on spending the night in the train station, I left the Frog and Bucket in much the same way as I had arrived. Minutes later, as I sat in a cab, watching the meter slowly gobbling up my night’s earnings, I couldn’t help thinking that, brilliant though the evening was, an astrologer would have definitely avoided booking an event on the day of the New Moon!

Now on radio!

Finally, I am now on radio, once a month, here in the UK. The radio station is ‘Magic 999′,sister station to ‘Rock FM’. I take calls for about 40 minutes from 0830 on Jude’s Breakfast Show. The show broadcasts to Lancashire but non-Lancastrians can listen online on www.magic999.co.uk. My next show is likely to be in May.
